WebTranslateIt includes free Machine Translation on all plans. You can choose from several translation engines to best suit your needs.

Available Machine Translation Engines#

AI-Powered Translation Features#

AI translation engines (Gemini AI and Mistral AI) offer enhanced capabilities:

• Plural form support — They can translate all plural forms of a string at once, respecting the target language’s plural rules.
• ICU MessageFormat support — They understand ICU MessageFormat syntax (plural, select, selectordinal) and translate only the human-readable text while preserving variable names, ICU keywords, and brace structure. Plural categories are automatically expanded to match the target language’s CLDR plural rules — for example, an English source with one and other will be translated into Polish with one, few, many, and other.
• Contextual awareness — They consider developer comments and instructions attached to strings.
• Term Base integration — Terminology from your project’s Term Base is used to ensure consistent translations.
• AI Context instructions — You can provide project-level and locale-level instructions to guide the AI’s translation style, tone, and terminology preferences.

Setting Up Machine Translation#

To enable machine translation, click on the machine translation icon in the translation toolbar and select the translation engine you’d like to use.

How Suggestions Are Ranked#

Note that you won’t necessarily get suggestions from Machine Translation engines for a string if suggestions from the Project Translation Memory or the Global Translation Memory rank higher.

AI Text Modification#

When you have AI engines (Gemini or Mistral) enabled, you can use AI to rewrite your existing translations in different styles. This is useful for adjusting tone, formality, or length without starting from scratch.

Rewrite Tabs#

When editing a translation, a row of tabs appears above the suggestions panel. Click any preset tab to get AI-generated alternatives from all your enabled engines:

• Formal — Rewrites the text in a more formal register.
• Casual — Makes the text sound more conversational and relaxed.
• Technical — Adjusts the text for a technical audience.
• Shorter — Condenses the text while preserving its meaning.
• Elaborate — Expands the text with more detail.
• Other — Opens a dropdown with your saved custom prompts, or lets you enter a custom instruction via a dialog.

Each tab queries all enabled AI engines and displays clickable results. Click on a result to paste it into the translation textarea.

Results are cached per tab while you stay on the segment. If you edit the translation text, the cache is automatically cleared and the active tab reloads with fresh results.

AI Transform from the Context Menu#

You can also apply AI transformations from the segment context menu. Right-click on a segment and select AI Transform, then choose a preset or Custom… to enter your own instruction.

When choosing Custom…, a dialog lets you describe how to transform the text. You can optionally save the prompt with a name for reuse — saved prompts appear in both the context menu and the Other rewrite tab.

Batch AI Transform#

AI Transform is also available as a batch operation. Select segments, choose AI Transform as the operation, pick a preset or write a custom instruction, and apply it to all selected segments at once.
